Last week, we received a letter in the mail from a 1st-grade teacher, Ms. Bahlau, from Grass Lake, Michigan. Her class sent a very nice picture to fire departments in every state to thank the firefighters for their service since it is Fire Prevention Month.
The Oklahoma City Fire Department was very thankful for the kind gesture, so a picture of a group of our firefighters was sent back to Ms. Bahlau for her class to see.
It didn't end there, however. Since it is Fire Prevention Month, we asked Ms. Bahlau if it would be possible to give her students a small "assignment." We asked that they go home and ask their parents/guardians to check the smoke alarms in their homes to ensure they are present and working. We also said that if pictures were taken of them testing their home smoke alarms, we would post them on our Facebook page with parental consent. Ms. Bahlau sent us several pics, so we are honoring our end of the deal.
We are happy to report that most of the homes did indeed have working smoke alarms. In one case, it was discovered that batteries needed to be replaced. GREAT JOB! That is what it's all about.
Not all heroes wear capes. These 1st graders are heroes for making sure they have working smoke alarms.
