Course Description:
This course is designed for students to learn about exponential and radical functions, rational functions and equations, the foundations for functions, systems of linear equations and inequalities, quadratic functions, and matrices.
Performance Objectives:
Students will:
Learn to identify quadratic functions, understand their characteristics, and solve by factoring, completing the square, and the quadratic formula.
Learn to simplify and solve exponential functions and equations. They will also simplify radical functions and perform operations on radicals. (2.5 weeks)
Learn to model, graph and simplify rational functions. They will also perform operations on rational expressions and divide polynomials. (2.5 weeks)
Review sets of numbers and simplifying of exponential expressions. Also, the students will be introduced to functions by identifying functions and performing simple transformations on them. (3 weeks)
Lean about solving systems of linear equations by graphing, substitution, and elimination. They will work with linear inequalities in two variables, and systems of linear inequalities. Linear programming and parametric equations will be covered. (2 weeks)
Learn what a quadratic function is, how to solve a quadratic function, and factoring quadratic expressions. They will learn how to complete the square, the quadratic formula, and solving quadratic equations with and without complex numbers. (4 weeks)
Learn what matrices are and use them to solve simple problems and to solve systems of equations. (1 weeks)
EXPECTATIONS FOR ALGEBRA B
In attendance for 90% of the class days
Participate in class discussions
All make-up tests and quizzes will be taken during lunch or after school within 3 days. Or the student will receive a zero for that assignment. It is the students responsibility to communicate with the teacher as to when they will make up the work. If a students absence is unexcused they will receive a zero for the any work due that day.
If a student is absent for school business they are responsible for the work they missed that day. If there is a test or quiz on the day they return then they will be expected to take it with the class.
Be responsible for the calculator assigned to them and make financial restitution for any damage done to the calculator assigned to them
Do all homework
Do well on tests
Always doing the best possible!!!!
Grading and Testing
Homework:
Homework will be checked randomly for completeness (this will be worth 5 points each time). Homework will be collected each Friday (or the last day of the week). Up to six questions from the weeks assignments will be selected for each student to record on a separate sheet of paper. This will be worth 20 points each week. Other questions may be collected randomly during the week also.
The marking period grades will be computed as follows:
Quizzes --- 30%
Tests --- 40%
Homework --- 20%
Employability Skills --- 10%
Employability Skills
This category involves class participation, writing assignments, weekly journal entries, etc.
Grading Scale (by percent):
93-100 A87-89 B+77-79 C+67-69 D+90-92 A-84-86 B74-76 C64-66 D80-83 B-70-73 C-60-63 D-59 & below E
Rubric for grading most test and quiz individual short answer or solving questions on a 4 point scale (Most Multiple Choice questions will be worth 2 points each):
0-4 points per part, each part of the question is worth five points
0 pts for no response or unrelated response
1 pt for response that is related to question, but hard to understand
2 pts response has major errors; only half of answer is correct; correct answer, but no explanation
3 pts response is complete, but involves minor errors in calculation or explanation that is incorrect; indicates some understanding of mathematical ideas, but in an unclear way
4 pts response is complete and correct; involves explanations that are understandable and complete
Materials needed daily:
Pencils (absolutely no pen for work that will be turned in, you will receive a zero for that assignment), notebook, folder, textbook, and calculator.
Classroom Rules:
Be quiet and listen when the teacher talks.
Be inside the door when the bell rings ready to work.
Only 3 bathroom/drink passes will be allowed each semester.
Be polite to classmates, no putdowns.
Stay seated when someone is addressing the class.
Cell phones. There is a time and a place for these. More specific instructions will be given with regards to there use.
***** THIS SYLLABUS IS A GUIDE TO BE USED AT THE DISCRETION OF THE TEACHER.
HOW TO STUDY FOR A TEST
Make a list of specific objectives that will be on the test.
Find examples and problems for each objective you have listed. Work them.
Learn definitions of new words. Try writing these definitions from memory to see if you really know the word.
Begin to review the objectives several days before the test. Review a few of them each day.
Look for and try to recall general patterns. Study previous quizzes. Look in particular at problems that you did incorrectly.
Select problems from past homework assignments (and not just the easy ones). Rework the problems. Compare the results with your original homework results.
Do not just scan your homework and previous tests. Instead, pick up a pencil and do the problem again.
Concentrate on objectives that gave you trouble on previous tests. Work problems that you did incorrectly the first time.
