SYLLABUS
Semester 2 2015-2016
Instructor: Mrs. Reichow
Email: HYPERLINK "mailto:sarah.reichow@grasslakeschools.com" sarah.reichow@grasslakeschools.com
Office Hours for Mrs. Reichow: Monday-Thursday 7:15am 7:45am
Textbooks: Algebra 2
Holt, Rinehart, and Winston c. 2007
Course Description:
This course is designed for those students who desire a more advanced math class. Topics covered in this class will include Polynomial Functions, Exponential and Logarithmic Functions, Rational Functions, Conic sections, Discrete Mathematics (Counting principals and Sequences and Series), Trigonometric functions and Identities.
Performance Objectives:
Students will:
Learn about exponential growth and decay; work with exponential functions, logarithmic functions and properties of logarithmic functions. They will learn the applications of common logarithms, the natural base (e), and solve equations using logarithms.
Learn about what a polynomial is, polynomial functions and their graphs. They will be able to find products and factor polynomials. They will be able to solve polynomial equations and find the zeroes of polynomial functions.
Learn to work with inverse, joint, and combined variations of rational functions, graph rational functions, multiply and divide rational expressions, add and subtract rational expressions, solve rational equations and inequalities, recognize and manipulate radical expressions and radical functions, simplify radical expressions, and solve radical equations and inequalities.
Learn to identify and write the equations for conic sections such as circles, parabolas, ellipses and hyperbolas. They will also learn how to solve systems of equations involving these conic sections.
Learn about permutations and combinations and how they are used to solve counting problems. Students will also learn how to solve probability problems and identify independent and dependent events.
Learn to identify arithmetic and geometric sequences and series. Use Pascals triangle and the binomial theorem.
Learn the six trigonometric functions, their graphs and inverses. Use them to solve right triangle problems. Learn the difference between degree and radian measure and finding arc lengths.
Learn to prove or disprove that two trigonometric expressions are identical and to solve trigonometric equations using the trigonometric identities. Learn how to solve non right triangle problems using the Law of Sines and Cosines.
Materials Needed Daily:
Algebra 2 Textbook
Pencil (Absolutely no pens for math work that is being turned in.)
3-ring binder (will NEATLY contain homework, notes, quizzes/tests and log, reviews, etc.)
Dividers for 3-ring binder (4 Dividers: Notes, Homework, Quizzes/Tests, and Daily Questions)
Planner (optional-the school will not be providing a planner)
Classroom Expectations:
Its simple -
Be respectful. (language & actions)
Be prepared.
Be responsible.
Failure to meet these classroom expectations will result in CONSEQUENCES:
removed from classroom/ call home/ discipline referral/ Thursday detention
**If you are removed from class you are responsible for finding and making up the work you missed.**
Homework Policy:
Homework will be assigned on a regular basis. Learning is doing. To do well in this class, you must do your homework!
In order to receive credit, homework must be legible, in pencil, organized, and labeled with your name, class period, the date, and the assignment. If it is not, you will not get credit!
Do your homework when it is assigned! Homework is graded on weekly homework quizzes. You will know about them in advance!!! You must have the original problem from the book, any work necessary, and the correct answer to receive full credit for each problem.
Student will be allowed 2 late passes per semester. Homework can only be turned in late with a late pass for full credit. Otherwise, NO LATE WORK IS ACCEPTED. ****Donations of Kleenex or will result in 1 bonus late pass. (Only allowed 3 extra passes each nine weeks.)
Absent?
Check the daily folders on the cabinet for any handouts.
Check the homework calendar for any book assignments.
Ask a neighbor for notes to borrow.
Check out my fusion page.
Complete assignments within the number of days absent.
If absent on the day of a quiz or test, student must take it before/after school. Make arrangements accordingly within the number of days you were absent.
It is the responsibility of the STUDENT to make up all work/tests. It is NOT the teachers responsibility to remind you. Failure to make up homework/tests/quizzes in the allotted time will result in a zero.
Students are NOT allowed to make up work for UNEXCUSED absences.
Three or more tardies = unexcused absence.
Passes:
Students will receive 3 hall passes per quarter for bathroom, locker, drinks, etc (6 total for the semester). Once the 3 hall passes have been used, students will not be allowed to leave. Plan ahead.
Leftovers/FYI
Electronic devices are to be put away at all times, unless the teacher requests the students to use them for an activity.
DO THE HOMEWORK. DO THE HOMEWORK. DO THE HOMEWORK.
ASK QUESTIONS! You cannot afford to pretend to understand. I cant read your mind.
Yellow calculators cannot be taken home. Only use the calculator number you are assigned to. Any damage to that calculator will be your responsibility. If there is damage to the calculator when you arrive, inform me immediately.
Zero Tolerance Cheating Policy: Students cheating/copying or involved in cheating/copying will receive a zero for that assignment and an automatic detention will be assigned.
Refer to POWERSCHOOL for grades. If there is a discrepancy, talk to me immediately not later.
Updates will be put on my teacher website. Visit HYPERLINK "http://www.grasslakeschools.com" www.grasslakeschools.com and go to the high school page to select teachers. Specific classes will be available at the teacher web page.
Grading and Testing
The marking period grades will be calculated as follows:
Tests --- 40%
Quizzes --- 30%
Homework --- 20%
Employability Skills --- 10%
Employability Skills
This category involves class participation, organization, and binder checks.
Grading Scale (by percent):

***** THIS SYLLABUS IS A GUIDE TO BE USED AT THE DISCRETION OF THE TEACHER.
HOW TO STUDY FOR A MATH TEST
Make a list of specific objectives that will be on the test.
Find examples and problems for each objective you have listed. Work them.
Learn definitions of new words. Try writing these definitions from memory to see if you really know the word.
Begin to review the objectives several days before the test. Review a few of them each day.
Look for and try to recall general patterns. Study previous quizzes. Look in particular at problems that you did incorrectly.
Select problems from past homework assignments (and not just the easy ones). Rework the problems. Compare the results with your original homework results.
Do not just scan your homework and previous tests. Instead, pick up a pencil and do the problem again.
Concentrate on objectives that gave you trouble on previous tests. Work problems that you did incorrectly the first time.
Dear Parent/Guardian,
I look forward to getting to know your student throughout this semester. Your involvement in the life of your student is a very important key to their success and your continuous support is greatly appreciated. Please use the online resources of POWERSCHOOL for grades and attendance updates, the my.hrw.com (HOLT) website for additional math assistance, and my teacher web page for announcements and agendas. A great semester is ahead of us!
Sincerely,
Mrs. Reichow
